Walking in the light
A: Camping out was a great idea. I love the fresh air, the quietness.
C: I like roasting marshmellows.
B: Guys, I can’t find my favorite blankie.
A: Can’t you sleep without your blankie one night?
B: No way, I need my blankie. We’ll have to go back the way we came to find it.
A: It is pitch dark. You can’t find your blankie in the dark. Plus the path from our car to the camping spot was narrow and had lots of places to trip. You could get hurt.
B: (starting to cry) I need my blankie!
C: Its OK. We’ll find your blankie. I brought a flashlight. That will help us find our way in the dark. You’ll have to walk right next to me.
B: Let’s go find my blankie. (B and C start looking. B falls)
B: Ooops. Fell in a hole back there.
C: Are you OK?
B: I think so.
C: You need to walk in the light. Try to walk right next to me.
B: OK. (They are walking, B gets out of the light and falls again) Tripped on something.
C: You have to walk in the light.
B: Ok. I just get side tracked sometimes. (B gets out of the light and falls one more time) Ohhhhh. My head.
C: That last fall was a bad one. Look at your head.
D: (Entering scene) Hey, I think somebody dropped this blankie. You guys know anything about it?
B: It’s my blankie. I really need it now. My head hurts
D: Let’s see….(examines B’s head) . I think we can get your head fixed up. What happened?
B: I was walking and fell.
C: Three times. Even with my flashlight.
D: You have to walk in the light to miss all the dangerous places. (Starts bandaging B’s head)
B: SometimesI won’t forget that.
D: It reminds me of something Jesus said. In 1 John 1:7. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
B: How does that work?
C: Jesus is the light, right?
D: Right. Walking in the light means walking close enough to Jesus that our sins are clearly illuminated.
B: Just like I was supposed to walk close to C because C had the flashlight.
D: You’ve got it. When we walk close to Jesus we can see, repent of and confess our sins and be forgiven.
C: Otherwise they trip us up and you know what that means.
B: It means getting hurt.
C: Next time I hear that verse I’m going to imagine walking with Jesus who is holding a flashlight and it shines on the path ahead of us.
B: Me too. We can see where to step, the places to miss, and the dangers to avoid.
D: I think you have learned an important lesson today. (Finishes fixing B’s head).
B: Yeah, don’t forget my blankie so I don’t have to go stumbling around in the dark..
C: And if you are walking in the dark, walk as close to the light as you can.
B: But the most important thing to remember is walk close to Jesus because he is the light of the world.
D: And walking next to Jesus will keep us from stumbling into sin.
