UNITY
CHARACTERS: 4 (A, B, C & D) and a human to read as narrator
PROPS: Bible, baseball, optional baseball gloves, bat
(Narrator is off to the side reading 1 Cor. 12: 14 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. the rest arguing (without sound) in the background. They sound childish and grouchy when they can be heard)
D: OK team. Let’s start practice.
B: I call pitcher.
A: No, I’m pitcher.
D: Here’s a list the coach sent. He wants us to practice at these positions. (They all look at list)
A: (Grouchy) Listen, if I'm not the pitcher then I'm going home and taking my ball with me.
B:(Whining) I called it first.
A: Too bad.
NARRATOR: Reads verse 15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
C: (Loudly, hands on hips) I wanna be the short stop.
D: (Trying to be reasonable) But we need you as catcher. Nobody else plays it as well as you do.....
B: (Whining) and besides if I can't pitch I'm going to be the short stop.
C: I ain't playing catcher. I hate catching. I'm playing short stop.
NARRATOR: Reads verse 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. while B & C get into a pushing/yelling match. A and D pull them apart
C: We'll just both play short stop. (C & B nod at each other)
D: But who's gonna catch..? We gotta have a catcher.....
A: (Mad) Forget it then. I’m taking my ball and going home. (Exits.)
NARRATOR: Reads verses 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
C: (Angry) Great, there goes the ball. How are we gonna practice now? (Pointing at D) This is all your fault.
B: Yeah, your fault. I’m leaving.
C: Me too (They exit)
Narrator: Read 1 Cor. 12: 18-19 But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be?
D: Baseball sure isn’t fun to play by yourself.
NARRATOR: No, it works much better when everyone gets along and shares the equipment. (Others start to come back)
A: I’m bored. There’s nothing fun to do by myself.
C: Sorry guys. I shouldn’t have got mad and walked off.
B: Hey, guys. Sorry I blew up and was selfish. We’re a team and need to play as a team.
D: You know what – this is just like what our friend here was reading in the Bible.
A: Can you read it again? I wasn’t listening. I was yelling.
NARRATOR: 12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
A: That is kind of like me saying if I can’t pitch I won’t play.
NARRATOR: 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
B: Yeah, having 2 short stops doesn’t make much sense. It is better to have different positions.
NARRATOR: 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
D: Just like in baseball there are lots of positions but just one team.
NARRATOR: 21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor.
C: We should do that in baseball too.
D: What do you mean?
C: Treat the right fielder with as much respect as the pitcher.
NARRATOR: But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
B: That make sense in baseball and in church. We should all do our part to the best of our ability.
NARRATOR: 27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
C: Does that mean even kids have a part to do at church?
NARRATOR: It does. You don’t have to be the preacher or a singer or anyone thing to be a part of God’s team.
D: As long as we play the part our heavenly coach – that’s God – gives us, we’ll be winners.
A: (To audience) Guys, what kinds of things can kids do at church to do their part?
(NARRATOR and audience interact with suggestions)
Can be done using other sports - change props and position names. Quarterback or goalie instead of pitcher, etc.
