Promises, Promises

Lorraine:      Good morning, children! How are you? Good! I'm glad to see you today.

Scott: (singing loudly) "Jesus loves me, this I know For the Bible tells me so…"

Lorraine:      Hey, Scott, I was talking to the kids!

Scott: Oh, sorry Lorraine! I could hear the children singing earlier, and it sounded so beautiful! I just love singing about how much God loves us.

Lorraine:      By the way, Scott, you haven't seen Whiskers around, have you?

Scott: Little Whiskers? I believe I saw him playing along the rafters a little while ago. I think he was playing "Hide and Squeak" with his little mousie friends. Why do you ask?

Lorraine:      Well, earlier today he promised to help me teach the baboon babies how to play Big Bopper       Bumby Bongo. He was supposed to meet me an hour ago, but he didn't show up. And as you may or may not  know, teaching Big Bopper Bumby Bongo to baby baboons is a two-teacher job. So they only learned the Bongo part, and then spent the rest of the time swinging around and screeching. That got kind of old.

Scott: Yes, I can imagine it would. Do they sound something like this? (screeches high-pitchedly)

Lorraine:      Exactly – oh my achin' head!

Scott: I see. Well, if I see Whiskers, I'll let you know…why, here he is now!

Whiskers:    Hi, Scott! Hi, Lorraine! Gosh, we just had a          great game of "Hide and Squeak". Pinky and Dinky couldn't find me at all! Then Binky ran right over my tail, but didn't see me, then finally Winky found me. It was so much fun!

Lorraine: Uh, Whiskers, don't you remember about teaching the baby baboons Big Bopper Bumby Bongo? You promised me you'd be there.

Scott: Yes, and when you didn't show up, all the baboons         made a noise like this: (screeches again)

Whiskers:    Yowza!

Lorraine:      Well, what about it, Whiskers?

Whiskers:    I know I said I'd help, Lorraine, but when the Inky quadruplets asked me to play "Hide and Squeak", well, that sounded like a lot more fun than teaching baboons. And I didn't promise you anything.

Lorraine:      Yes, you did, Whiskers.

Whiskers:    No, I did not! I did not say, "I promise I will help you teach the baby baboons Big Bumpy Booboo Bobo. It doesn't count unless you say "I Promise".

Scott: A promise isn't just saying "I Promise" something, or cross my heart or anything like that. A promise is anytime you say you'll do something.

Lorraine:      That's right, Scott. There are lots of promises in the Bible that God makes to us, but He never says "I promise" – He just says, "I will do this", and His saying the words is the promise. And it's the same for us.

Whiskers:    (slowly)So I did make a promise. And I broke a promise too, when I didn't help you like I said I would. Have you ever broken a promise, Lorraine?

Lorraine:      Yes, I have, Whiskers, and I'm sorry that I did.

Whiskers:    I'm sorry too. (pause) Does God ever break His promises?

Scott: No, He doesn't, Whiskers. You can count on Him to do exactly what He has said He'll do!

Whiskers:    Well, that's a relief.

Scott: Yes, it is indeed. By the way, how do you play Bomby boopee bingo bunbun?

Lorraine:      It's Big Bopper Bumby Bongo – and we'll teach you if you promise not to screech. Right, Whiskers!

Whiskers:    Right!

Scott: It's a deal! Children, in your Bible lesson today, you'll learn more about God's promises. We'll see you next Sunday! Good-bye and God bless you!
